The COVID-19 Omicron Variant is spreading rapidly throughout the state of Alaska and here in the interior.
The State of Alaska has recorded 1,750 positive cases today (January 7th), which is higher than the State’s previous infection rate during the peak of the Delta Variant spread. Additionally, there were a total of 6,320 positive cases recorded between December 31st – January 7th, a number that more than doubles the case count from the week prior. These numbers are expected to climb at a rapid rate within the next few days and will continue working through our population over an estimated 4-6 week period.
Here is what you need to know about the new omicron variant:
- It is more infectious than the Delta variant.
- Monoclonal Antibody treatment are not as effective against the strain
- COVID-19 vaccines and boosters are the best defense against severe illness and hospitalization
- Masking is still effective against the strain as well as avoiding large gatherings.
One of the main concerns is that this variant is going to spread quickly throughout our population and will impact healthcare services throughout the State. TCC has already enforced safety protocols to minimize the impact of the virus among our workforce and keep our services open.
