Coping with Suicide

Following a suicide, two common questions replay through the hearts and minds of Survivors:

  • “Will things ever be normal again?”
  • “Why?”

There are no easy answers. What we know is that, just as people can die of heart disease or cancer, people can die as a consequence of mental illness or addiction. Things won’t be normal again, but as you heal, you will define a different “normal.” Everyone hurts differently, and we all heal differently.

What is important is that you allow yourself to feel how you feel. Allow yourself to ask questions that may never have an answer until you are ready to move on. It’s also important to talk with someone when you need to talk. That “someone” could be someone you trust, or it could be a counselor at TCC’s Behavioral Health department. We can help you in person, over the phone, or through our telebehavioral health service. Just give us a call, and we can talk about your options.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255 also has trained counselors available 24/7. Services are free and confidential.
