In the Footsteps of the Traveller: Northern Dene Astronomy” Book Launch

✨Exciting news!✨

“In the Footsteps of the Traveller” by Chris M. Cannon is now available! This work unveils the profound significance of stars in Northern Dene culture and features collaborations with over 65 Dene Elders across 34 communities, including Arctic Village, Fort Yukon and Tetlin, offering a unique glimpse into Indigenous astronomical knowledge and its role in shaping life, language, and worldviews.

To celebrate, an introduction to the book will be held in the MTCVC’s theatre while UAF’s Geophysical Institute will offer tours of the night sky in their inflatable portable planetarium. The event will also include a screening of the Molly of Denali episodes “The Off-Trail Tale/Star Eyes” where characters use the constellation Nek’eltaeni for navigation.

Refreshments will be served. This event is family-friendly and we encourage you to come learn about Nek’eltaeni and our night sky!
