WHEREAS, Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) is an Alaska Native tribal health and social services consortium established by the Interior Alaska tribes and tribal communities, to provide a unified voice in advancing sovereign tribal governments through the promotion of physical and mental wellness, education, socioeconomic development and culture of the Interior Alaska Native; and
WHEREAS, The State of Alaska consistently scores as one of the least served states in the country for access to broadband and within Alaska, the Interior as a region is especially lacking in internet options; and
WHEREAS, The cost of developing and submitting an application to the USDA Community Connect Grant Program is normally prohibitively expensive due to the complexity of the grant; and
WHEREAS, The community of Northway is unique in their location only 50 miles from the Canadian border with a main fiber backbone line owned by Matanuska Telephone Association (MTA) running directly through the community; and
WHEREAS, Because of the support provided by the Denali Commission, Northway Village Council was able to submit a proposal that will fund a broadband fiber buildout to every residence, business and community facility in the community of Northway, Alaska and establish an MOU with Matanuska Telephone Association to act as out internet service provider should the project receive funding; and
WHEREAS, TCC seeks to provide support across the region to improve internet access.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Tanana Chiefs Conference Full Board of Directors would like to express our sincere thanks to the Denali Commission for their support in funding the application costs to towards the Northway Fiber Buildout project; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Tanana Chiefs Conference greatly appreciates the Denali Commissions’ support for their continued commitment to improving infrastructure across rural Alaska.
