TYPES OF LEARNING EXPERIENCES

TCC offers job shadowing for current or prospective healthcare students, ages 16 and over, to observe their discipline of interest.  The job shadow experience does not fulfill any clinical or internship requirements, nor does it provide any hands-on experience.

Students interested in job shadowing will need to complete the TCC Job Shadow Application (link to fillable PDF) and return along with a resume/Curriculum Vitae (CV) to whitney.paolino@tananachiefs.org.

As outlined in our Volunteer/Job Shadow policy:

  • Experiences cannot exceed 15 days
  • May not involve isolated, direct patient contact
  • May not involve isolated access to patient information

In order to ensure a meaningful experience for students and staff, we request that job shadows come prepared with specific learning goals and questions.  This will require taking some time to research the discipline and having a basic understanding.  However, your engagement will lead to more fruitful discussions if this is the path you wish to follow.

Please take the time to review the links below to familiarize yourself with job shadowing.  A professionalism demeanor and appearance are expected as a courtesy to our staff and patients, who are offering this opportunity:

Students applying for a clinical rotation placement will first need to complete the TCC Student Rotation Application (link to fillable PDF) and return with a Curriculum Vitae (CV) to whitney.paolino@tananachiefs.org for review and consideration.  Rotation requests necessitate a lengthy review process, so please plan accordingly.

If accepted, students will work with the Health Education Manager to complete additional TCC paperwork, Indian Health Services background check and Orientation material both online and in-person.  This process can take between six to eight weeks.  A TCC MOA, signed by both TCC and the student’s school, must be in place prior to the rotation.  The process for a new MOA can take several months to complete if not in place.

At this time, housing is not available with Tanana Chiefs Conference.  However, recommendations are listed in the “TCC Student Rotation Orientation Letter” students receive if they are accepted.

Residents: As licensed physicians, residents are required to go through the full student application process and will first need to complete the TCC Student Rotation Application (link to fillable PDF) and return with a Curriculum Vitae (CV) to annita.clark@tananachiefs.org for review and consideration.  Rotation requests necessitate a lengthy review process, so please plan accordingly.

If accepted, residents will work with the TCC Credentialing staff to begin a separate process.  Please note that an Alaska Resident Permit is also required by the State of Alaska Medical Board prior to starting your rotation.  See link:

Nurse Practitioner:  Nurse Practitioner students may need to apply for authorization to work in clinical practice prior to completing their studies.  This may occur if your school is out-of-state or if you have a lapsed nurse practitioner authorization and need to make up clinical hours prior to earning full authorization. Please see the following link for Alaska requirements and forms:

Pharmacy Intern: Application for licensure as a pre-graduate or post-graduate.  License required before beginning an internship in Alaska:

Tanana Chiefs Conference employees looking to participate in student learning at TCC are required to complete the same application process (see Clinical Rotation/Job Shadow tabs) to ensure that they receive proper credits and to avoid potential liability and insurance concerns.
